BBT Premiere

Trio Sõra piano trio BBT Fellowship 2020

Kelly-Marie Murphy
Triple Concerto
When I Too Long Have Looked Upon Your Face
Orchestre Philharmonie de Radio France/Mikko Franck
World premiere 18 February at Auditorium de Radio France, Paris
Commissioned by BBT, Radio France and Pro Quartet-CEMC

A sonnet by Edna St. Vincent Millay was the inspiration for Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy to weave a touching thread about love, loss, and infatuation through her triple concerto. As she writes in her blog “Watching the concert hall fill up on Friday evening was amazing.  I watch the patrons find their seats; I hear fragments of music from the stage.  It is electrifying!  When the trio took the stage in their scarlet red tuxedos, the audience was exhilarated.  They supported and willed the musicians through every note and every movement.  I could not have imagined a better outcome.  It was absolutely thrilling!”

BBT Premiere & Audio

Annelien Van Wauwe clarinet BBT Award 2018

Wim Henderickx
Sutra, Concerto for Clarinet (basset), Orchestra and Electronics

World premiere 31 March at City Halls, Glasgow, Scotland
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra/Martyn Brabbins
Commissioned by BBT and BBC Radio 3
Flow album release 1 April Pentatone PTC5186973

Annelien Van Wauwe’s love of yoga and its positive influence on her clarinet playing led her to commission Flemish composer Wim Henderickx to write Sutra for her, a work inspired by breathing, yogic philosophy and meditation. She believes music, like yoga, requires a perfect balance between technical skills, active engagement, total concentration and control which, under optimal conditions, leads to a state of ‘flow’ – the title of her latest album for Pentatone which pairs Sutra with Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto (recorded with NDR Radiophilharmonie conducted by Andrew Manze).

Francisco Coll
Piano Trio

World premiere 24 January at Centro Nacional de Difusión, Madrid, Spain
UK premiere 25 June at Aldeburgh Festival, UK
Commissioned by BBT, Britten Pears Arts and Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (Madrid)

The Trio’s world premiere performance of this four-movement work with its motifs of opera and flamenco was warmly received. El Pais described it as packed with ideas ‘full of verve and magnificent details supported by dynamic contrasts. In short, an excellent work’.  Following the UK premiere in Aldeburgh this summer, Trio Isimsiz will record the work as part of the repertoire on its third album for Rubicon Classics, completing their recordings of the Brahms Piano Trios.
