Trio Isimsiz New on Rubicon Classics
Korngold, Brahms and première
recording of Francisco Coll

TRIO ISIMSIZ

Rubicon Classics RCD1107
Korngold Piano Trio Op No 1
Francisco Coll Piano Trio
Brahms Piano Trio No 2 in C major Op 87

Release date 8 December 2023

For its latest BBT-supported album on the Rubicon Classics label, Trio Isimsiz completes its recordings of all three Brahms Piano trios, along with the first recording of a new work written for them by Spanish composer Francisco Coll (also co-commissioned by BBT).

Coll’s 17-minute piano trio is cast in four movements and is rich in contrasting styles and influences ranging from the familiar to unconventional. At its live première in Madrid Scherzo magazine’s Santiago Martín Bermúdez described it as “loaded with ideas that make it especially interesting” with its allusions to Strauss’s opera Die schweigesame Frau, a Larghetto imbued with melodic features from the flamenco, a ‘hallucinated fugue’ and fragments of tango.

For Trio Isimsiz the thrill and challenge of performing and recording a brand new work is matched by the opening piece on this album, Korngold’s Piano Trio Op 1 composed when he was just 12 years old. “It made an immediate impression on us when we discovered it,” comments the Trio’s pianist Erdem Misirlioglu, “and we have always found it almost unfathomable that it was written by someone so young. It displays an impressive level of maturity and a clear compositional command, making it a worthy companion to the music of Brahms and Coll.”

By contrast, the Brahms Piano Trio No 2 is a mature work written over a two-year period (1880-1882) of intense creativity. It provides a warm-hearted and high-spirited finale not only to this album, but as the conclusion to the Trio’s recording of all three Brahms piano trios on Rubicon Classics.

… Brahms’ Trio No 1 in B major is presented in a reading serving as a worthy successor to the debut album’s superb Trio No 3, pulling us in from the get-go to Brahms’ intense world of passionate emotion tempered by poised Classicism, confidence and joy tempered by fragility and doubt. It’s a reading to lose yourself in, whether in the ardent sweetness and power oftheir forte singing, or in the myriad different qualities of silence that they serve. We can only hope that a third album eventually arrives with Brahms No 2.

…full of verve and magnificent details supported by dynamic contrasts. In short, an excellent work.
