BBT Films – BBT Commissions

Commissioning new music is one of BBT’s most creative and rewarding ways of helping young musicians and is an important theme in our 20th-anniversary celebrations in June 2023. This short film by BBT filmmaker Graham Johnston features archive footage of early interviews with pairings such as Kalevi Aho & Martin Fröst and Gavin Bryars & Ralph van Raat, to more recent conversations with the likes of Francisco Coll, Sebastian Fagerlund, Wim Henderickx and Kate Whitley.

To date BBT has developed a portfolio of more than 50 commissions for over 30 BBT award-winners. The film will also be screened at Wigmore Hall as part of the BBT20 weekend.#

‘Seeing is believing’ is an obvious tenet of filmmaking and there is no better way to clearly demonstrate a musician’s technique, artistry and expressive powers to the widest public.  In today’s world of digital technology and instant accessibility, high-quality performance footage is almost a prerequisite for developing a young artist’s career. To capitalise on his prizewinning recital at the esteemed Internationaler Wettbewerb für Liedkunst Stuttgart and with funds from his BBT Fellowship, Theodore Platt has commissioned four short studio films from the team at Culiner Creative Circle in Berlin to showcase his operatic and Lieder singing and further promote his growing career.

BBT Film – Il Ritmo della Terra

Il Ritmo della Terra (Rhythm of the Earth)

Simone Rubino percussion & counter-tenor

Lamberto Curtoni composer & cello   Mariangela Gualtieri text

Il Ritmo della Terra (Rhythm of the Earth) was commissioned by BBT from Italian composer and cellist Lamberto Curtoni for 2020 BBT award-winner Simone Rubino. Multi-disciplinary schemes such as this are at the heart of Simone’s mission to curate and connect ideas and musical styles in innovative projects.  Inherent in this composition is a call to humanity to listen to the vital rhythms of nature, while the film’s visuals embrace nature’s beauty and showcase the joy and mesmerising intensity of the performances by Rubino and a small ensemble of percussion and strings scholars from Live Music Now Munich.

The public premiere of the film will be part of our BBT 20th-anniversary weekend at Wigmore Hall, after which it will be released both for streaming and download by First Hand Records.

BBT Communities

Sounds of Change  BBT Communities 2021

Finding connection and unleashing creativity in a safe space are key elements of the projects Sounds of Change initiates in asylum-seeker centres and refugee camps in the Netherlands and beyond.  A BBT Communities grant was given to the organisation in 2021 to help set up the Sounds of Change Academy, which trains the people who facilitate musical creativity in these places. This uplifting film shows the process and results of their efforts which enrich the lives of many children and young people.

The new BBT Communities grants for 2023 will be announced 24 March.
