Gerald Resch String Quartet No 3 ‘attacca’
Beethoven String Quartet in F Op 59 No 1 ‘Razumovsky‘

Attaca, the new string quartet after which this album is named, was written for the Aris Quartett by Austrian composer Gerald Resch specifically as a companion piece to Beethoven’s Quartet in F Major, Op. 59 No.1 ‘Razumovsky‘. The planned world premiere in 2020, ‘Beethoven Year’, would have also been the quartet’s debut at Vienna’s Musikverein which commissioned the work, but it was cancelled due to the pandemic. Despite this disappointment the quartet forged ahead with a recording, its fourth album on the GENUIN label, as a tribute to this special programme. Resch’s central ideas for his third string quartet, is the attacca principle, the seamless connection between individual sections and movements as a way of telling a consistent story throughout the whole piece, harking back to Beethoven: one of the first to write works that are not just a series of movements, but whose parts combine together to form a larger whole.
