It’s never easy to balance violin, cello and piano but these three sound almost ideal, without a trace of congestion (for which Linn’s engineers deserve particular credit). The Shostakovich, in particular, generates real atmosphere, and while there are juicier accounts of the Korngold, the way these performers balance Viennese swing and expressionist bite is persuasive in itself.
