THE MUSIC OF PAUL BEN-HAIM

Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award winner 2014, violinist Itamar Zorman has long-harboured a passion for the music of his Israeli compatriot Paul Ben-Haim, who was born in Germany as Paul Frankenburger, but who settled in Israel as the country was born.  Zorman’s debut disc for BIS follows chronologically Ben-Haim’s musical development in Israel from the lyrical splendour of his Yizkor (Evocation) through his use of musical themes from his adopted homeland to the late solo violin Studies, taking in the Violin Concerto and, with piano, his Three Songs without Words and Berceuse sfaradite.  As a coda, Zorman includes his father’s orchestration of Ben-Haim’s Toccata (from the Five Pieces for Piano Op 34).  He is joined by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conductor Philippe Bach and pianist Amy Wang.

BIS-2398 SACD, released spring 2019 (UK 29 March).
