Formed in 2014, Swedish-Norwegian string quartet, Opus13, is named after Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in A minor Op 13, the first work they played together as eager young teenagers. As well as its BBT Award, the Quartet won first prizes in 2025 at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition and the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, where its performance was described as being “of a profundity and kaleidoscopic colour that would have been astounding from any ensemble, let alone a young one still making itself known” (Gramophone). These accolades marked Opus13’s international breakthrough on top of its acclaimed reputation in Scandinavia where it was awarded Norway’s prestigious Equinor Classical Music Award in 2023.

The ensemble appears at major festivals across Europe, North America and Asia and collaborates with leading artists including Janine Jansen, Alisa Weilerstein and Tabea Zimmermann. The Quartet’s repertoire spans core classical works alongside a strong commitment to Nordic and contemporary music by composers such as Grieg, Stenhammar, Tarrodi, Byström and Fagerlund. Opus13 also engages in genre-crossing collaborations with folk and popular musicians.

The Quartet works with mentors including members of the Vertavo Quartet and The Royal Danish Conservatoire’s Tim Frederiksen, and in 2025 began studying with Oliver Wille of the Kuss Quartet (itself one of BBT’s first Award recipients in 2003).
