Jonathan Leibovitz - About

Israeli clarinettist Jonathan Leibovitz is known for his richly expressive sound and fearless musical instincts: “He has that singular ability to mesmerise the listener in everything he does, moulding every phrase with imagination, infallible control and above all with a commanding personality.” (BBC Music Magazine). Welcomed at celebrated chamber music festivals across Europe, Australia and the Americas and in concerto with several of the world’s renowned orchestras, Jonathan is represented by the Young Concert Artists Trust (YCAT), and he toured with a stellar ensemble of soloists (including fellow BBT artists Hana Chang, Timothy Ridout, James Baillieu and Sini Simonen of the Castalian Quartet) to celebrate YCAT’s 40th anniversary in 2024. Jonathan’s debut album, Eastern Reflections (released on Delphian Records in 2024), is an indication of his artistic path that often moves between personal and historical, exploring Eastern European, Jewish and 20th century sound worlds with clarity and depth. Jonathan studied with Yevgeny Yehudin at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Tel Aviv, and later with François Benda at the Music Academy in Basel, where he has recently completed a ‘Master soloist’ degree.

Jonathan is focussing his BBT Fellowship funding around two contemporary music projects: a film and recording project spanning live performance, a digital download and a performance resource; and a new clarinet co-concerto commission.

Jonathan has been supported with a BBT Fellowship since 2024.
