Elisabeth Hetherington - About

The rapidly rising star that is Canadian soprano, Elisabeth Hetherington, is by all accounts one to follow closely. Based in the Netherlands, she is known not only for her “beautiful voice . . . great sensitivity, very solid technique and exquisite taste” (Scherzo), but also her ability to seamlessly combine early and contemporary music in programmes and performances of distinction and originality. With a background in modern dance, Elisabeth places physicality and multi-disciplinary thinking at the heart of all her work and enjoys creative collaborations with choreographers, dance companies, instrumentalists, composers and poets.

Among the music ensembles with whom she sings and creates programmes are B’Rock Baroque Orchestra, Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Het Muziek (AskoSchönberg), the Phion Orchestra and the Dutch Radio Philharmonic. This adventurous and imaginative approach to musical performance and storytelling takes her to festivals and opera houses across Europe and has also won her the esteemed Dutch Music Prize in 2024, as well as her BBT Award.

Elisabeth has a Bachelor’s Degree in Voice Performance from the University of Toronto and graduated cum laude from the Masters of Historical Performance programme at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam where she studied with Xenia Meijer. She is also a coach, mentor and active researcher, most noted for her work in the field of the Original Pronunciation of Elizabethan English.
