As long as there are institutions like BBT, there is hope for art, for dreamers who take risks in their creative search. I cannot wait to bring to life music that wouldn’t be created without BBT’s support, music that will influence and shape, guide and challenge me and the audience.
Born into a musical family in Russia, Anastasia Kobekina has been studying the cello since the age of four and was praised early in her professional international career as having “huge potential and almost overwhelming sincerity” (The Strad). She is recognised for her broad repertoire and intuitive programming and, with her musicality and natural ability to communicate through her music, Anastasia captivates audiences everywhere as a soloist with leading orchestras and conductors at many of the world’s most famous concert halls and festivals. Her infectious enthusiasm for music across many genres and styles, along with her ultimate command of both baroque and modern instruments, also inspire some of most exciting composers of the day.
And it is the commissioning of three new and contrasting concertos on which Anastasia has chosen to focus her BBT funding. The first, a ‘cello symphony’ from Bryce Dessner, will premiere in Dublin in Autumn 2025 and has further co-commissioning performances planned for Prague, Sydney, London and Berlin over future seasons. A second commission, conceived for a site-specific performance in a major art museum, will see its first performance in summer 2026, and a third project is in the pipeline for the 2027/28 season.
Anastasia has been supported with a BBT Award since 2022.
