Sicilian cellist/composer Alessio Pianelli studied in Palermo with Giovanni Sollima and in Basel with Thomas Demenga.

Prizewinner of several international competitions, including the Antonio Janigro International Cello Competition 2006 and International Cello Competition B Mazzacurati 2016, Alessio has regularly performed as a soloist with symphony and chamber orchestras such as Philarmonie Baden-Baden, Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, Aargauer Sinfonie Orchester, Sinfonieorchester Basel and Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI di Torino.  He has performed in major venues throughout Europe, Asia and North America, including Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, Menhuin Forum Bern, Auditorium Rai in Turin, Stadt Casino Basel, Teatro Politeama in Palermo and Phoenix Hall Osaka.

Since 2014 Alessio has been developing an ongoing project of six albums, as a member of the artist-run label Almendra Music, combining Bach cello Suites with contemporary works: Prèlude (2014) and Sulla Quarta (2017) are the first two releases.

As a member of the Avos Piano Quartet, Alessio has recorded the Schumann's Op 47 Piano Quartets and Brahms' Op 25 Quartet for the Japanese label Livenotes Nami Records. He is a passionate exponent of contemporary music and has recorded chamber music works by Italian composers Marco Nodari and Orazio Sciortino.

His piece Tanzen Wir!, was awarded first prize at the International Composition Competition In Clausura organized by the Ravenna Festival and 100 Cellos in 2016. Other pieces have been published by Casa Musicale Sonzogno and Müller & Schade and recorded for Seed Music.  They have been performed in Italy, Germany, Switzerland and France.
