Borletti-Buitoni Trust

We have decided to use our award to commission a new concerto: with only a handful of two-piano concertos in the repertoire, the possibility of adding another is incredibly exciting. It has been an unexpected luxury to have the genuine support of all the cultural, musical and financial benefactors that make up the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. What a privilege for us to be able to broaden both the repertoire and scope of what we do as a piano duo, especially in a professional climate where this kind of commitment to young artists is so unique.

Simon Crawford-Phillips and Philip Moore occupy a unique place amongst piano duos: they are established chamber musicians in their own right, with flourishing independent international careers; yet since 1995 have devoted several thousands of hours to this most exacting of disciplines, giving them extraordinary musical empathy. They met as students of Hamish Milne at the Royal Academy of Music, and during their time with him won 1st prize at the 1997 International Schubert Competition in the Czech Republic, 2nd prize at the 1998 Tokyo International Piano Duo Competition and the 1999 Royal Over-Seas League Rio Tinto Ensemble Prize. The Duo were selected for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust in London from 2001 to 2006. They have performed at the major UK festivals and recently at venues including the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), NDR Hanover, Barbican (with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields), The Royal Opera House, St. John’s Smith Square, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall and Glasgow’s City Halls. They have made frequent appearances as concerto artists and recitalists at the Southbank Centre and Wigmore Hall. Regular performers on BBC Radio 3, they made their Proms debut in 2001, and have recorded on the Deux-Elles label to critical acclaim. Their latest disc, including Philip’s own arrangement of Stravinsky’s Firebird, was released in December 2006. In 2008 they gave the world premiere of Detlev Glanert’s Two Piano Concerto, co-commissioned by the Duo and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and conducted by Martyn Brabbins. Highlights of the coming season include concerts in the UK and Italy and a live broadcast from LSO St. Luke’s. Philip Moore and Simon Crawford-Phillips are Steinway Artists and Associates of the Royal Academy of Music.

Simon Crawford-Phillips and Philip Moore premiere Detlev Glanert Double Piano Concerto

Simon Crawford-Phillips and Philip Moore used their 2004 BBT fellowship award to co-commission this new work for the piano repertoire. Our film follows the final three months of preparation as they experienced for the first time the thrill and excitement of progressing from a totally blank canvas to a fully fledged orchestral performance. We follow the journey from the duo’s first rehearsals in London, via sessions with Detlev Glanert in Hannover, to the premiere with Martyn Brabbins and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow, on 15 March 2008.
