Music by Bach, Bartok & Hartmann
Altara (ALT 1016)

“I feel very honored to have been chosen for a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and hope to fulfill the committee’s expectations. I consider it my obligation to responsibly spend the generous grant for my further musical development with my being privileged to receive advice and support from Mitsuko Uchida.”
Viviane Hagner

2004 Borletti-Buitoni Trust award winner, Viviane Hagner, has committed her BBT award to supporting a three-CD recording project with Altara. For her first solo recording she has chosen three works for unaccompanied violin by composers who represent landmarks in her own musical journey: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita for Solo Violin in D minor – maybe the most famous solo violin work ever written– as well as two important works from the 20th century, Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin and Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s Suite no.1 for Solo Violin.

Each one contains a “chaconne” movement. Originally a dance, it had already taken on a lamenting character in Bach’s time. Both Bartók’s and Hartmann’s “Chaconne” were clearly modelled on Bach’s famous work – and all were composed at significant times in the composer’s lives: Bach’s when he was in mourning for his wife, Bartok’s when he was nearing the end of his life, and Hartmann’s at the beginning of his musical career when he was just 22 (although already displaying a mournful character that would identify much of his major work).
