BBT News Update April 2012

Elias String Quartet Beethoven Webstream

Elias String Quartet

Elias String Quartet Beethoven Webstream

On its dedicated website the Elias String Quartet continues to share its intrepid journey of discovery of the Beethoven quartets as it reaches one of the most challenging milestones, the Grosse Fuge. Following on from Sara Bitlloch’s much admired insight film about the work, a complete Wigmore Hall performance is available from today as a webstream for a limited 10 day period only.

The Quartet begins UK performances of the complete Beethoven Quartets cycle in the forthcoming season and, in the meantime, has recently captured the hearts of American audiences (and sold out at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall) on it’s US debut tour.

“Few quartets at any stage of their evolution have this much personality - as manifested by an unusually warm blend [and] emotional individuality.” - Philadelphia Inquirer 29.03.12

Aronowitz Ensemble CD Release

Aronowitz Ensemble CD Release

Mendelssohn String Quartet in B flat, Op.87
Martin Suckling To See the Dark Between
Dvorák Piano Quintet No. 2
Sonimage release May 2012

Aronowitz violinist Nadia Wijzenbeek comments: “This CD is all about playing music we love! It’s an unexpected combination, but they all fit nicely together.” The new work by Martin Suckling was specially commissioned for the whole ensemble of seven players and is “very effective, imaginative, evocative music.”

Irina Zahharenkova CD Release

Irina Zahharenkova CD Release

Scarlatti Piano Sonatas
Classical Records (Russia) release April 2012

This recording follows on from Bach’s Goldberg Variations released on the same label in 2010, also supported by BBT. “Beautifully sculpted pianism with plenty of colour, character and imagination. A very enterprising programme, too: a good number of the sonatas - all of them musically interesting - are relatively unfamiliar.” (Rob Cowan BBC Radio 3)

Trio Mondrian CD Release

Trio Mondrian CD Release

Ravel Piano Trio in A minor
Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op.67
Challenge Classics release 30 March 2012

Russian Expressionism and French Impressionism perfectly balanced in two major works, structurally identical but emotionally contrasting. “This performance [of the Shostakovich] has terrific integrity, blending bitterness and irony with the elegiac... The Mondrians’ colours and textures in the Ravel are luminous, with delicacy and gusto achieving a fine equilibrium.” (Gramophone, April 2012)
