Martin Fröst clarinet

Award Winner 2003

Swedish clarinet virtuoso Martin Fröst is one of the most charismatic and multi-talented instrumentalists performing today appearing regularly in the leading music centres and major orchestras worldwide. In August 2007, he gave his Salzburg Festival debut in two performances of the Mozart concerto with the Mozarteum Orchestra and Giovanni Antonini. Coming up in 2007/08 and following seasons are debuts with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Staatsorchester Stuttgart with Michael Schønwandt, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Oslo Philharmonic. Other highlights include Nielsen’s Clarinet concerto with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Ashkenazy and a tour with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel in summer 2008. In 2006, Martin Fröst gave the world premiere of Kalevi Aho’s Concerto (commissioned for Fröst by the Borletti-Buitoni Trust) with Osmo Vänskä and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded the Aho concerto with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä and performs the work again with this orchestra in October 2007, as well as with the Czech Philharmonic and the BBC Scottish Symphony in 2009. Martin Fröst was one of the first recipients of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and has been asked to take part in concerts with Mitsuko Uchida and other BBT Winners in the US and Europe in 2008. He studied with Hans Deinzer in Hannover and Sölve Kingstedt in Stockholm and has won the first prize in the Geneva Competition and has also received the Nippon Music Award as well as the Akzo Nobel Music Award. He was a BBC New Generation Artist from 2003-5.

Press quotes

"…An even more compelling reason for welcoming the piece [Aho’s Clarinet Concerto] is that it was commissioned by the Borletti-Butioni Trust for the sensational young Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst. The music is tailored to his phenomenal technique…"

(John Allison/The Sunday Telegraph/30April 2006)

The most important aspect of this unique award is of course that it offers me as a performer the freedom to invest a very generous sum of money into my career in ways that I find most creative and constructive. With the support, the know-how and the contacts of the Artistic Committee of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust it will be possible for me to use my award to achieve some of the high artistic goals I have set for myself. I am very grateful and excited about the possibilities that lie ahead!
